THE Chief Executive, Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, has expressed his deepest gratitude to members of the Civil Service, who displayed dedication and commitment under very trying circumstances recently when a case of human swine influenza (influenza A H1N1) led to a major quarantine operation at Metropark Hotel Wanchai.

“Since the health alert was raised, I know that you have all been working very long hours under tremendous stress, to provide our community with the best possible chance of preventing this virus from entering Hong Kong and spreading throughout the city,” said Mr Tsang.

He highlighted the fact that little was known about the disease, making the efforts of those involved all the more commendable.

“Even though we are once again facing the threat of a new disease, with all the uncertainties that threaten our own personal safety, staff on the frontline of this battle have been as selfless as ever in their desire to serve the community,” he said.

The task of fighting the influenza A H1N1 virus had spared few civil servants, making it a real team achievement.

“This effort involved many bureaus and departments. Many colleagues have gone above and beyond the call of duty in the fight against a possible pandemic. For this, you have my deepest gratitude,” the Chief Executive said.

In addition to the praise, he added a few words of caution for the days ahead.

“We are not out of the woods yet. We must remain vigilant and prepared for any escalation of measures that may be necessary,” he said.

“But it is reassuring to know that we have such fine public servants, who are totally focused on protecting the public health with trademark professionalism, efficiency and devotion to duty.”
