Appointment of Registrar of Companies
The Government today (August 17) announced the appointment of Ms Ada Chung Lai-ling to the post of Registrar of Companies to succeed Mr Gordon W E Jones with effect from August 27. Mr Jones will proceed on pre-retirement leave on the same day after 34 years of service.
Ms Chung, Deputy Law Officer of the Department of Justice, was selected for the post through in-service appointment. Commenting on the appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue said Ms Chung had a strong professional background in legal and accountancy services with good managerial and administrative experience. "I have every confidence that she will continue to serve the community with professionalism and dedication in her new capacity, and ably lead the Companies Registry to meet the challenges ahead," she said.
Miss Yue said Mr Jones had rendered very dedicated and commendable service throughout the years. In particular, in his capacity as the Registrar of Companies over the past 14 years, he had completely revolutionised the manner in which the Companies Registry provided its public services and played a leading role in company law and corporate governance reform. "We wish him a happy retirement," Miss Yue said.

Mr Gordon W.E. Jones, J.P.
Aged 56, Mr Jones joined the Government's Administrative Officer Grade in October 1973 and was promoted to the rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade B in January 1992. Over the years, he has served in various branches and departments, including the former Colonial Secretariat, the former New Territories Administration, the former Environment Branch, the former Social Services Branch, the former Urban Services Department, the former City and New Territories Administration, the former Finance Branch, the former Transport Branch and the former Registrar General's Department. He has been Registrar of Companies since May 1993.
Ms Ada Chung Lai-ling
Aged 48, Ms Chung joined the Government as an Assistant Assessor in June 1981. She was called to the Bar in England in July 1988. She joined the former Attorney General's Chambers as Assistant Crown Counsel in August 1988. She was promoted to Crown Counsel in August 1989, to Senior Crown Counsel in June 1991, to Deputy Principal Government Counsel in February 1998 and to Principal Government Counsel in March 2006. Ms Chung is currently a Deputy Law Officer of the Civil Division, Department of Justice.
