But that’s not all — their daughter, Tania, represented Hong Kong at the Beijing Olympics — the first time a Hong Kong female triathlete has taken part in such an event at the Olympics. Tania, 21, also took part in the Olympic Torch Relay in Hong Kong. Now she has her sights firmly set on next year’s All China Games and, longer-term, on the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Both Superintendent Mak and his wife have had a long involvement in sport. In the early 1970s, Mrs Mak was named Hong Kong’s Best Woman Athlete; she was also the Hong Kong record-holder for the 100 and 200-metre sprints.
Superintendent Mak, after obtaining a Masters Degree in Physical Education in the United States in 1979, returned to Hong Kong, where he continued promoting sports through coaching and taking on senior posts with various sporting bodies, including the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association, the Hong Kong Triathlon Association, the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Handicapped. Currently, he is on the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association.
