THE Department of Health has been taking up a World Health Organisation campaign which promotes ‘Clean Care is Safer Care'.
A series of activities aimed at publicising the importance of hand-washing started in January 2006 and continued until June.
Red packets with health messages were distributed by the department's Port Health Office to travellers at border control points during Chinese New Year.
Posters, pamphlets and stickers encouraging good hand-washing practice were distributed for display at schools, kindergartens, child care centres, housing estates, homes for the elderly, shopping arcades and food premises.
Other activities included displaying posters in public areas, and distributing calendars and souvenirs all promoting the ‘wash hands for better health' message.
Advice aiming at preventing the spread of communicable diseases includes washing hands with liquid soap before handling food and eating; before and after touching eyes, nose or mouth; and after going to the toilet, coughing or sneezing. | For a more complete wash, the messages advise that special care should be taken by rubbing soap into the palms, backs of hands, between fingers and backs of fingers, thumbs, finger tips and wrists for at least 20 seconds before rinsing the hands thoroughly under running water.
