Talks on Climate Change

The thematic activity "Talks on Climate Change" was held on 30 June at the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) in Tsim Sha Tsui. Around 40 underprivileged children together with their parents joined the event. The activity was organised by the HKO volunteer team with the assistance of the Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong. The activity aimed to bring out the effects of climate change on mankind and to arouse the participants' awareness of environmental protection. It also hoped that the participants could convey the message to their friends and relatives after attending the event.

The programme started with a slide show on the work of HKO and the effects of climate change on mankind by Mr Leung Yin-kong, Scientific Officer of HKO. He explained the causes of global warming, such as emission of greenhouse gases that caused the rise of sea level and changes in rainfall patterns. Mr Leung also briefed the participants the forecast of climatic changes in the following decades using different data charts.

Before the end of the visit, the HKO volunteer team led the participants tour around the history room, exhibition hall, and the HK Meteorological Centre, showing them the equipment used daily for climate forecast including rain gauge, wind vane, thermometer, mercury barometer, etc.
