Fung Yuen Butterfly Conservation Project

Another thematic voluntary activity 'Fung Yuen Butterfly Conservation Project' was organised under the theme 'Protect and Conserve Our Environment' on 24 June at Tai Po Fung Yuen Butterfly Conservation Area. Around 60 participants from the Buildings Department, Drainage Services Department, Highways Department and Civil Sevice Bureau joined this event.

Fung Yuen, which is situated about 2 kilometers from Tai Po Town Centre, is operated by the Tai Po Environmental Association. It is one of the most famous sites for appreciating butterflies in Hong Kong and Asia. Since 1980, it has been put in the list of 'Site of Special Scientific Interest', and about 70% of the butterfly species in Kong Kong can be found in this area.

Under the guidance of working staff of the Tai Po Environmental Association, the volunteer teams acted as part-time farmers to perform cleaning, weeding and planting work in the conservation area, so as to maintain a good environment for the butterflies. Besides, the volunteer teams, led by the eco-tour guides, took the opportunity to explore the ecosystem as well as different species of butterflies in the conservation area. This event has equipped the volunteer teams with knowledge about the conservation area, which will help them organise various types of volunteer activities for Fung Yuen Butterfly Conservation Area in future.
