Smart Living – Caring for the Elderly

'Smart Living – Caring for the Elderly' was organised by the S.K.H. Holy Carpenter Church District Elderly Community Centre in collaboration with Kowloon City District Council and a number of volunteer agencies on 28 October 2007. About 40 members of volunteer teams of Land Registry, Office of Government Chief Information Officer, Trade and Industry Department and Highways Department took part in the activity which started from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on that day, during which about 1,500 elderlies received health services.

Medical check-ups including tests for blood pressure, blood sugar, blood cholesterol, eye and ear functions, and scanning of bone density were conducted for the elderlies. They also received vaccine injections against influenza, foot and neck/shoulder message services. Based on the results of these tests, professional advices were offered to them by the Chinese Medicine Practitioners and nurses of the Hospital Authority. At the end of the programme, the elderlies were taught some physical exercises and games which could promote mental health.

Volunteer teams of the departments assisted in the registration process, maintenance of order, and most essentially, they were responsible for the session on exercises and games for promotion of mental health. They had received special training to teach these exercises from professional chiropractors before the event.

After the event, all elderlies left with a heart full of joy and thankfulness for the care and services they received.
