Visit to Tai Tam Tuk Historic Pumping Station

'Visit to Tai Tam Tuk Historic Pumping Station' activity was one of the events under the theme ‘Promote arts and cultural activites’ of the Civil Service Volunteer Action, which was organized by the Water Supplies Department Volunteer Team and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The activity was held on 28 October 2007, and around 50 students from Buddhist Sin Tak College were led by some 20 volunteers from WSD and HKIE to visit the Tai Tam Tuk Pumping Station, which is located at Tai Tam Bay, at the south of Hong Kong Island.

Tai Tam Tuk Pumping Station was built in 1904. Though it is more than a hundred years old, this pumping station is still in use and it is the oldest pumping station in the water supply history of Hong Kong. Therefore, the Government has already graded this pumping station as a Grade I historic building. Mr. Chan Tze-ho, Senior Engineer in the Water Supplies Department, introduced the water supply history of Hong Kong to the students and explained the conservation and repair work of Tai Tam Tuk Pumping Station, such as the maintenance work of the 61 feet high square shape chimney.

After the tour, the volunteer team members arranged a treasure hunt for the students to reinforce their knowledge of the water supply history of Hong Kong.
